Kerswell Barn

Concept designs for a redundant barn

Our client asked us to develop concept designs for the conversion of a redundant Dutch barn on their North Devon farm.

Keen to promote good levels of natural daylight and make the most of countryside views, their wish-list included an upside-down arrangement, open-plan spaces and ambitious sustainability aspirations through the use of natural materials and high thermal efficiency.

We used bubble diagrams to demonstrate conceptual layouts of proposed spaces on the ground and first floors. This exercise helped establish the hierarchy and relationship of each space to be explored at a later stage.

This approach enabled us to develop floor plans and indicative internal 3D views suggesting the scope and layout of the site and designs that we felt were an appropriate development of the existing structure.

Our proposals were felt to be in-keeping with the immediate and wider local context, of a responsible scale and responsive the barn's setting.

This project represents a proactive approach to making use of a redundant building.
