University of Plymouth Smeaton Building

Internal remodelling of city centre university building housing cutting-edge computing, gaming and robotics labs

We were pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with the University of Plymouth, supporting the relocation of three colleges within its city centre campus.

In collaboration with AtkinsRéalis and the University’s campus team, we developed design proposals to reconfigure internal spaces and extend the Smeaton Building at the southern end of the campus.

While modest in scale, this project plays a critical role in enabling the University’s wider campus investment strategy by delivering purpose-built engineering workshops and studios tailored to the needs of the three colleges. It also supports the University’s estate strategy and ten-year campus masterplan.

The scheme addresses several longstanding challenges within the building, particularly around accessibility and spatial efficiency, while aligning with the sustainability goals of the wider university estate.

Careful planning ensured the complex requirements of the business case and functional briefs were met, all within the constraints of the existing structure.
